Is 6 hours of sleep enough?

December 1, 2023

No, for the majority of people 6 hours of sleep is not enough for your health and to wake up fresh and fit.

Sleep is essential for your (mental) health and to have more energy and focus and to be emotionally stable.

Day and night belong together. If you want to get the most out of your day, a good night is part of that.

Do you want to get the most out of your life by optimising your sleep? Then follow one of my sleep courses. I am a neuroscientist and sleep specialist and have put the knowledge I have gained over recent years into these courses. All to “let everyone enjoy the positive properties of sleep to the fullest”.

In the text below you’ll read how many hours of sleep you actually need.

01

How many hours of sleep is enough?

People need between 6.5 and 9 hours of sleep.

Note: be careful about immediately seeking out the minimum limit, see below.

Matthew Walker, our sleep guru from Australia, now says:

Really, 0% of the population can sleep less than 6.5 hours.

By the way, I still speak to people who say: “But I’ve been doing it for years on 4 hours of sleep”.

And then I always say: “Yes, even if you smoke, you get no guarantee of illness. But the chance that you’ll get an illness does increase considerably.”

That’s how you should learn to think about your sleep too.

Of course it can go well.

02

After how many hours of sleep are you rested?

You need at least 6.5 hours of sleep.

Note: the people who can live decently on 6.5 hours are an exception. They have, for example, a genetic variation. The studies show that these people sleep more deeply.

Yes, you can create for yourself that you sleep more deeply, but then you’ll have to do all sorts of things very well.

And by that I mean the timing and rhythm of things.

That means you time your eating and drinking and stimuli for your senses (such as light) well and go to bed at the same time every day.

That makes real sleep efficient and deep.

Don’t do that?

Then the studies show that even 8 hours of sleep may not be enough.

So the moment you start sleeping very lightly, because you sleep at varying times. Or don’t do all those things I just mentioned sensibly. So make a mess of it, then you need more and more sleep.
